3. Common Polishing Process
Step 1: Surface Preparation (Coarse Grinding)
- Use 30µm – 15µm SiC lapping film to remove surface irregularities and achieve uniform flatness.
Step 2: Intermediate Polishing
- Use 12µm – 6µm grit to refine scratches and prepare the surface for fine finishing.
- Maintain even pressure and use appropriate lubrication (water or slurry if required).
Step 3: Fine Polishing
- Apply 3µm – 1µm SiC lapping film for enhanced smoothness and scratch reduction.
- Ensure clean work conditions to avoid contamination.
Step 4: Final Polishing (Mirror Finish)
- Use 0.5µm – 0.3µm grit for ultra-smooth finishing.
- Often combined with slurry or polishing solutions for maximum effectiveness.

XYT Silicon Carbide Lapping Film. Available in grades 1, 2, 3, 5, 9, 15, and 30 microns. Silicon Carbide is a hard blocky abrasive that provides fast, consistent material removal. Used on most hard and soft materials where a controlled removal rate is required. Ideal for glass, fiber optics, coarse grinding of SEM and TEM samples, lapidary and other applications. A final polish with diamond or aluminum oxide lapping film may be required.
