How to Use XYT Lapping Film:

  1. Initial Preparation: Use a 600 grit diamond stone to remove any nicks or chips from the blade.
  2. Sharpening Process:
    • Begin by sharpening the edge to around 1500 grit.
    • Apply 3-4 drops of lubricant (e.g., Krud Kutter or any all-purpose cleaner) evenly across the film.
    • Using a backstroke motion similar to stropping, take 50-75 strokes on each side of the blade. Adjust the number of strokes based on the blade's hardness and the sharpening angle.
  3. Progression Through Grits: Start with the coarsest grit and move to the finest, ensuring each strip is kept clean and lubricated to maximize lifespan.
  4. Cleaning and Maintenance:
    • Clean the film with a few drops of Krud Kutter and wipe with a lint-free cloth to remove swarf.
    • Store used strips on a clean, non-porous surface for later use.

Performance and Longevity: Extensive testing shows that each strip of XYT lapping film can handle approximately 1500 passes over the steel. Typically, it takes around 75 passes per side before moving up to a finer grit, allowing for sharpening of about 10 knives per strip.
